Artist-in-Residence

Artist in Residence
Posted on 03/17/2017

Dear McDonald International Students and Families,

Thank you for your participation in our recent PTA fundraiser. After receiving our budget allocation from the school district at the end of February, the staff established our priorities for the upcoming school year and we are appreciative of your contributions, which will afford us the ability to fund some of these priorities.

Earlier this week six 5th grade students from McDonald International had the opportunity to “welcome” about 400 people to the 15th Annual Alliance for Education Community Breakfast. The students opened the event by welcoming the guests and then sharing something they love about our school. They spoke in Japanese or Spanish and then in English. The students did an amazing job representing our school.

On Tuesday March 21, 2017 we will begin our Artist-in-Residence program. This year our Artist-in-Residence is Sumayya Diop.  Sumayya has been dancing, drumming, and singing with youth, young adults, and adults in the Seattle area for more than 10 years. Trained by the "Jali" (traditional storytellers) in African dance, Sumayya brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and skill to teaching. Currently, Sumayya is a teaching artist with Arts Corp and The Nature Consortium. During the 3 weeks Sumayya is at McDonald International, students will engage in African dance, song, drum rhythm, and choreography of “Fanga”. According to Sumayya, “The “big idea” of this residency is to provide an opportunity for students to explore the folklore of the African diaspora through song, drum rhythms, and dance, which builds confidence and personal power, while also helping them to understand and preserve cultural legacy.”  We cannot wait to see what students will learn during their time with Sumayya.

Please keep an eye out for the Seattle Public Schools climate survey. This survey will be sent to families, via email, sometime in April. The information from this survey provides the district and school with feedback on areas of strength and growth. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide us with this information.

I hope you have a great weekend and as always, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me or schedule a time to meet in person.

Sincerely,
Michelle Goldberg
