Annually, Seattle Public Library sponsors a "Battle of the Books" program; it primary aim is to instill a love of literature and build teamwork skills. Fourth and fifth graders at elementary schools form teams. All teams read 10 books vetted by SPL and SPS librarians for their thematic content and varying reading levels. At McDonald, we encourage all our Reading Scotties to read at least one of the titles. To become a member of a team, readers are encouraged to read at least 4 of the books.

    How It Works

The titles are announced by SPL on November 1st. Students learn about the books and program during library time, then the books are distributed to their ELA teachers for students to access. This year the classrooms are using some of the titles as book clubs, the remainder of the titles area available for check out.

Here are some of the important dates:

    • Early November students learn about the titles and books are available for reading.
    • January teams are formed. Teams meet to choose a name, practice answering questions, read more books.
    • February 4 from 1:15 to 2:15 is McDonald's in-house event. Join us in the gym to cheer on our readers.
    • Tuesday March 17 our McDonald winning team will take the Metro bus to the Downtown library to compete in the Semi-Finals. The event begins runs from 10:00 AM - 12:00.
    • Tuesday March 24 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM the City Finals at the Downtown Library. If our team wins during our semi-final, we will be participating in the City Finals.
