    How will it work?

    1. A student may put up to 2 books on HOLD in Destiny Discover. Watch  Mrs. Finnegan’s video on how to place a HOLD on a book. Students may only have 2 books on HOLD at this time. Please Remove HOLDs that put you over 2.
    2. On Tuesday before the Pick-Up day, Mrs. Finnegan will run a report and pull reserved books (books a student has placed on HOLD). A student must have placed the hold before Tuesday.
    3. After Monday, do NOT place HOLDs until after Wednesday. Your holds will display on my pull sheet.
    4. If the book is marked “IN” when you place the hold – it will most likely be ready for you at the next pick-date.
    5. On Wednesday before the pick-up date, an automated email notice will let a family know if books will be available on Thursday.
    6. On Thursday, from 11:00 to 3:00 families may pick up their reserved books during the following times:
      A - F: 11:00-12:00
      G - L: 12:00-1:00
      M - R: 1:00-2:00
      S - Z: 2:00-3:00

    The Details

Who can participate? At this time Curbside Pickup will be offered to 1st through 5th graders.

How many books can I put on HOLD?  Students can put up to 2 books on HOLD. **

How many books can I check out? Students can check out 2 books at a time.**
Graphic Novel Details: Because we have a small graphic novel selection, students may only put 1 Graphic Novel on hold each week. If you have more than one, I will release the hold for others.
Series Details: Depending on the series, please only place one of a series on HOLD. Remember, your books will be due the following week. For example, you can have one Keepers or Wings of Fire series. You could have 2 Short Chapter series on HOLD. For example, Encyclopedia brown, Magic Tree House. Check the books in the Green Dot and Orange Dot topics.

** These two details may change to best serve the students as I evaluate how the process is working.

I forgot to put books on HOLD. Can I just do it when I get there? Unfortunately, no books will be checked out on the spot. Only books that are IN and placed on HOLD by Tuesday morning will be ready for pick-up.

When are books due? Books are due one week later. We will be picking up your returned books when we give you your Reserved books.

How many books can I have out? Students may have 4 books out at a time. This is because the returned books will not be checked in before the new books are checked out.

I still have books out from last year! What do I do with those? Can I still hold new books? You can still HOLD new books; however, you will not be able to pick them up unless you bring last year’s books with you or return them beforehand.

Why so few books? Yes, at this time it isn’t very many books. But the check out and check in process is being done by only one person. Typically, a student explores the library and selects books, then we have helpers to help students check out the books. When the student returns the books, it is done in small classroom chunks and we have volunteers that help get them back in order. Also, books are shelved for easy retrieval the next time around. Now books must be quarantined on tables. See What Covid precautions are being taken.

Now, a report will be run that lists all hold request. Those books will be pulled (found) and then resorted by student. When books are returned they must be quarantined between 1 – 2 weeks. See more information in the Covid precautions.

What Covid precautions are being taken?

"In lieu of the recent publication of the study results about the COVID virus on library items, there is a small change in the current recommended quarantine time for our library materials. The study indicates that materials that were stacked horizontally still had COVID particles after six days. At this time, it is the recommendation for library materials that cannot be quarantined in an upright position (unstacked) be removed from use for two weeks. If items can rest unstacked, they may be quarantined for a solid week. This may affect the number of times librarians may offer curbside services unless there is a conscious effort to use a separate set of books.

Disinfecting individual books is time consuming, costly, damaging to books, and not always thorough, so is not recommended at this time. Use of gloves when handling materials and frequent hand washing are recommended. When planning curbside checkout services, librarians must make safe choices for their students and families that include proper distancing, use of PPE and quarantine time."
