4th & 5th Graders Global Reading Challenge is happening this year!

It may be different, but the fun is still part of the event.

    What's Currently Happening (12/7)

    • Readers are putting books on HOLD for pickup or finding them at SPL. I hope you are enjoying the books. Learn more about the books in the Book Reveal Video.
    • We have begun meeting on Teams to talk about books and participate in the SPL sponsored author visits. Join us through your calendar invite on Teams from 12:20 - 12:50 to talk books and begin quiz practice.

    Need Access to Books?

    What is it?

The Global Reading Challenge (GRC) is a collaborative effort between The Seattle Public Library (SPL) and Seattle Public Schools (SPS). Its purpose is to:

    • Promotes a love of reading
    • Introduces kids to diverse viewpoints
    • Helps kids retain more of what they read
    • Fosters group activities and teamwork

Every year, 4th and 5th graders from SPS participate in this fun, team-reading challenge. In a typical year, students are put on mixed-grade, mixed-gender teams, read 10 books pre-chosen for the challenge, and participate in a trivia-style competition against other McDonald teams. This year’s program is different.

    This Year's GRC

Between November 1st and January 29th, students will work independently, or with buddies of their choosing, to read as many of the 7 books as possible. Watch here to learn about each of the books.

SPL is also looking into an ART project option to combat screen fatigue and give students another way to participate. This could look like:

    • A student reads a book and creates something in response to it and shares it in February.
    • A student could create a poem, a drawing, a film, or cook a dish – anything they can take a picture of and that indicates that they have read the book and though about it
    • Students could work together to create something visual to represent one or all of the books and share it to SPL’s Instagram.
