About
McDonald International Elementary
McDonald International Immersion Model
McDonald International School is a language immersion school offering a curriculum infused with global awareness and cultural competence at every grade level. Our students receive instruction for half the day in English and half the day in either Spanish or Japanese. Mathematics and science are taught in the foreign language, while reading, writing, and social studies are taught in English.
Of special note: Teachers use the first few weeks of school for student academic assessments. All immersion students will remain in their assigned language. It may become necessary to move a few kindergarten students from AM to PM language (or vise-versa) depending on the make-up of classes.
English Language Arts (ELA): We will use the district-adopted curriculum from the Center for Collaborative Classroom (CCC), adapting as necessary to meet the needs of an immersion program. Instruction in all grades will be enriched with social studies content that addresses Washington State Standards.
Science: Science curriculum adopted by Seattle Public Schools will be taught in all grades in Spanish or Japanese.
Mathematics: We will teach to the Common Core and Washington State Standards in math using the curriculum adopted by Seattle Public Schools and other resources as necessary to supplement curriculum. Math will be taught in Spanish or Japanese.
Language Immersion: Staff will have on-going professional development classes throughout the year focusing on reading, writing, math, and science – in addition to workshops focused on becoming an International School.
Our Vision
To engage all students in partnership with family and community to become informed, compassionate, global citizens.
Our school community will challenge stereotypes and promote social justice in a diverse world through teaching and practicing our core values. We will foster outstanding academic achievement through integrated, collaborative learning. In our international education program, students will celebrate their own identity as they investigate the world, recognize different perspectives, and communicate effectively across cultures so they are empowered to take action.
